How MSI Ghana’s public sector partnership has strengthened services
Tahidu Issahaku, a public health nurse, shares their district’s journey to success, with help from MSI.

As a District Public Health Nurse, I would like to highlight the tremendous progress our district has made in expanding access and strengthening family planning services. This transformation has been possible through the invaluable support of MSI Ghana, whose public sector strengthening programme has greatly enhanced our capacity to deliver high-quality reproductive health care services.
With over two decades of experience in public health, I have witnessed how strategic partnerships, combined with targeted investments in training and equipment, can lead to significant improvements in health outcomes. Our recent experience in Nanumba North is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration, innovation, and commitment.
In 2022, MSI Ghana introduced its public sector strengthening programme in Nanumba North District. The aim was to improve access to long-acting reversible contraceptives and enhance the quality and reach of family planning services. This initiative came at a critical time for our district, which had been facing challenges such as limited resources, inadequate capacity building, and gaps in service delivery.
Through this partnership, MSI Ghana provided a comprehensive package of support that included:
- Counselling
- Eligibility for contraceptive methods
- Implant and IUD insertion and removal skills
- Management of side effects
- Medical emergency management
- Incident management and reporting
- Data documentation and reporting
- Equipment support (autoclaves for sterilization, IUD and implant insertion kits, BP apparatus, Weighing scales, Examination couches, instrument drum)
- Mentoring and regular supervisory visits.

This support has not only strengthened our technical capacity but also revitalized our approach to community engagement and service delivery. The results of our efforts are evident in the steady rise in family planning coverage across the district. Our data shows a year-on-year improvement:

On behalf of the Nanumba North Health Directorate, I extend our deepest appreciation to MSI Ghana for selecting our district as a partner in this critical initiative. The gains we have made over the past three years are a testament to what is possible when development partners and health systems work hand in hand toward shared goals.
Looking ahead, we are eager to see this initiative expanded to other health facilities and neighboring districts. With continued investment, strong leadership, and community involvement, we can further improve the health and well-being of women, adolescents, and families across the region.
Our journey is far from over, but the foundation has been laid. Together, we can sustain this momentum and ensure that every individual in Nanumba North has access to high-quality family planning services.
