A new life after a safe abortion

In mountainous Nepal, reproductive healthcare can be hard to come by—and for time-sensitive healthcare like abortion care, distance is a serious barrier. When safe providers aren’t available, women have no choice and often turn to backstreet providers, risking their lives and health.

That’s why at MSI, we bring reproductive healthcare directly to the homes of women in remote mountain communities. For Srijana, a mother of two living in a distant village, a visit from an MSI nurse was a lifeline.

Trekking through the mountains for choice

It was early in the morning when Tika, an MSI provider, packed up her backpack and set off on foot through the mountains.

Tika Kumari Ghimire, an MSI Health worker, walks to a remote village to provide services to clients in Sindhuli district, Bagmati, Nepal.

In her pack were all the supplies she needs to provide reproductive healthcare to women in remote communities—from IUDs and contraceptive implants to packs of abortion pills.  Her journey took her from her town up steep dirt roads and across swaying bridges, until she reached Srijana’s village.

Srijana’s story

With two children already at home, Srijana was facing a third pregnancy—and she was scared.

“I had already gone through two caesareans, and my health was weak,” she explained. “So, I decided to terminate the pregnancy.”

But the prospect of ending the pregnancy brought its own worries. She knew an aunt who had died after an unsafe abortion with a backstreet provider. Srijana and her family were terrified that the same thing might happen to her.

In search of a safer option, she called MSI. Tika came to her home and sat with her all night to make sure she was comfortable and safe while the medication abortion took effect.

A new life

Srijana’s safe abortion gave her the chance to protect her health, and to focus on her family. “Now, I am teaching at a school,” she says. “I wouldn’t have been able to work if I had a newborn. I’m able to focus on my children. To see and make them happy, healthy, and educated.”

“I would like to say thank you to the MSI Ladies and staff, and everyone who made this possible. I feel like I have a new life. I was almost gone, but they saved me.”

Everyone, no matter where they live, should have access to the reproductive healthcare they need to control their own futures.

Srijana was able to make the right choice for herself and her family.  And as long as women like Srijana are determined to shape their own futures, MSI will be there—crossing mountains, knocking on doors, and ensuring that safe choices reach even the most remote corners of the world.
